Cleaning Your Hearing Aids: Easy. Effective. Quick.

Got a couple minutes? That’s about all it takes for a little DIY to help keep your hearing aids working their best. Cleaning’s a big part of that. So whether you have receiver-in-the-canal (RIC), behind-the-ear (BTE), or in-the-ear (ITE) hearing technology, the Clearly Hearing Wellness Program has you covered.

How to Clean Receiver-in-the-Canal Devices

  1. Open the battery door to remove your disposable batteries, and wipe them with a soft cloth. Your cleaning tool has a convenient magnet at one end to make removing the battery a cinch. If you have rechargeable devices, you can skip this step.
  2. Wipe the entire device with a soft cloth.
  3. Locate the microphones on the outer shell of the device. Using a brush, gently sweep away debris from the microphone ports and from any buttons on the outer shell.
  4. Sweep out the battery compartment as well.
  5. Remove the wax guard with your wax-guard tool. It has one end to remove the old guard. The other end contains a new wax guard to insert after the old one is removed.
  6. Clean the dome. Use the wire brush or tree brush to clear out any debris within the dome, then wipe it down with a cloth or wet wipe. It’s important to use wet wipes made for hearing aids; other types could damage your device. Place the dome back on your device. If the dome shows any signs of wear, replace it with a new one.
  7. Overnight, leave the battery compartment open — with the batteries out — to help remove moisture and preserve battery life. This may not apply to rechargeable devices. Using the drying cup and drying capsules — or a hearing aid dehumidifier — is also effective in removing moisture from your device.
